5G Introduction

Introduction to 5G

Course length: 2 days

Target group: designers, testers, project managers and similar staff categories

Recommended background: good knowledge in basic LTE release 8 or 10

This course gives an introduction to the new 5G mobile system as specified by 3GPP. The course does not only focus on the radio part but looks at the complete system with a new core network with many new functions like virtualisation and software defined networks.

Course Objectives

The main objective of this course is to give an overview over the main functions in the new 5G mobile system. Part objectives are:

  • to describe the current time schedule for 5G standardisation.
  • to understand the main architecture of a complete 5G system including radio network, core network, virtualisation, software defined networks, network slicing and mobile edge computing.
  • to understand the design principles of the 5G new radio including radio channels and protocols.
  • to understand handover in 5G.
  • to understand the new quality of service architecture in 5G.
  • to understand the new security architecture used in 5G.

Target Group

The course is targeted to people that will work with mobile systems using the new 5G system. Examples are designers, testers, marketing people, requirement managers, project managers and similar staff categories.

Previous Knowledge

It is required that trainees have a general knowledge of Long Term Evolution as basic mobile functions will not be described in the course.

Name of module

Contents ( main topics )

Time schedule for 5G specifications

Non stand-alone radio and R15/R16 time schedule.

Main operator requirements put on 5G.

5G Architecture

The general architecture of the radio network and the core network is studied.

Network Functions Virtualisation

A general study on the main principles behind the technology and a more specific study how it is used in a mobile system.

Software Defined Mobile Networks

A general study on the main principles behind the technology and a more specific study on how the technology is used in a mobile network.

Network Slicing

This new fundamental concept in 5G can create virtual slices in the same physical network.

Mobile Edge Computing

A study of the concept that will enable applications to execute closer to the end user.

5G New Radio

The air interface of the new radio developed in 5G is studied with topics like OFDM, scalability, synchronisation, broadcasting, scheduling, massive MIMO and TDD.

Frequency Bands for 5G

A quick look at frequency bands that may be used in field trials and early networks.

Radio Channels

The radio channels in LTE is studied with physical, transport and logical channels.

Both radio access network protocols and core network protocols will be examined.

The handover function in 5G is studied.

Quality of Service

There is a modified way to express quality of service in 5G (if compared with LTE) and this new framework will be studied.

The security architecture of the new 5G system is examined.

Signalling Procedures

Some simplified signalling procedures are studied, for example, registration signalling.
