Introduction to 5G

Course length: 2 days

Target group: designers, testers, project managers and similar staff categories

Recommended background: good knowledge in basic LTE release 8 or 10

Introduction

This course gives an introduction to the new 5G mobile system as specified by 3GPP. The course does not only focus on the radio part but looks at the complete system with a new core network with many new functions like virtualisation and software defined networks.

Course Objectives

The main objective of this course is to give an overview over the main functions in the new 5G mobile system. Part objectives are:

  • to describe the current time schedule for 5G standardisation.
  • to understand the main architecture of a complete 5G system including radio network, core network, virtualisation, software defined networks, network slicing and mobile edge computing.
  • to understand the design principles of the 5G new radio including radio channels and protocols.
  • to understand handover in 5G.
  • to understand the new quality of service architecture in 5G.
  • to understand the new security architecture used in 5G.

Target Group

The course is targeted to people that will work with mobile systems using the new 5G system. Examples are designers, testers, marketing people, requirement managers, project managers and similar staff categories.

Previous Knowledge

It is required that trainees have a general knowledge of Long Term Evolution as basic mobile functions will not be described in the course.
