This course gives an introduction to cellular Internet of things. Many different radio technologies will be used for Internet of things. Some are suited for short-range and others are more suited for long range. The course describes the adaptations of the LTE standard to enable LTE to be a major player within this field. The course will also briefly describe some of the competing technologies that are on the market.
The main objective of this course is to describe the LTE adaptations to enable LTE to be used as a player for Internet of things. Part objectives are:
The course is targeted to people that will work with mobile systems using LTE-M and NB-IoT in various ways (testers, designers, project managers, product responsibles and similar staff categories).
It is required that trainees have a general knowledge of Long Term Evolution. This course will focus on the adaptations made to the “ordinary” LTE specifications in order to adapt it to Internet of things. Basic LTE functionality will not be described
The course is planned as a 2-day course with theoretical lessons, theoretical exercises, discussions and mind-maps (6 + 6 lessons are estimated)

A system for IoT
A brief introduction to the subject, a study of the market for IoT and then a look on how a complete system for IoT could look like.
Competing radio technologies
A brief study of low-power wide area network technology (LoRa is taken as an example), Bluetooth, Zig-Bee, Z-wave and Wi-Fi (HaLow).
Licensed and unlicensed spectrum.
Survey over 3GPP technologies
The difference in licensed and unlicensed spectrum regarding interference is examined.
The different radio technologies are briefly covered as well as a more detailed study of some machine type communication (MTC) related functions (overload protection in both core and radio network).
Problem areas for IoT
Some problem areas of machine type communication (MTC) will be studied like mass calling and battery consumption. MTC is the name used in 3GPP when describing M2M/IoT-related functions.
Procedures in a mobile network.
In order to understand the following chapters, a run-through of some procedures performed by the UE is made.
A short description of the latest adaptations of GSM to the IoT requirements.
This function uses only 1.4 MHz of frequency spectra to reduce the complexity of the mobile equipment and to reduce power consumption. It is described how the UE finds the network, how scheduling of data is done and many more functions and procedures.
5G and eMTC
The NB-IoT is almost a new radio standard but it is based on the LTE system in many parts. It uses a narrow channel of 0.18 MHz only to reduce the complexity of the mobile equipment as well as reduce the power consumption. The module also describes functions and procedures related to this standard.
Finally, a quick look into the 5G standard and the functions related to IoT in this coming standard.
